Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The mission was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, such as increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.

The group of women also comprised leaders in different industries.

The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a well-known tech mogul.
